چکیده
We report on the results of XMM-Newton observations of two Broad Absorption Line Quasars (BAL QSOs), Q1246-057 and SBS 1542+541. Unprecedented sensitivity of XMM allows spectral analysis of these X-ray weak sources. The X-ray spectral data of these sources can be fitted by a power-law with αX=1.0-1.2 and either a partially covering absorber or an ionized absorber model. Rest frame UV spectroscopy together with polarimetry favors the model with a partially covering absorber with column density a few times 10cmand a covering fraction of about 0.80. After correcting for absorption, the X-ray loudness of these BAL QSOs appears to be similar to other, unabsorbed quasars. The mystery of X-ray weakness of BAL QSOs appears to be all but solved, with strong absorption being the primary reason. With the available X-ray data, however, the issue of whether BAL QSOs represent highly accreting/ younger population of quasars remains unsettled. XMM-Newton, with its high throughput and excellent spatial and spectral resolution, is an ideal instrument for spectro-imaging observations of clusters. Presented here is an XMM-Newton mosaic observation of A2163, from which a new radial temperature profile is derived. The issue of background subtraction is addressed in some detail as a proper treatment of the background is essential for the de...

The observations and interpretation of broad iron lines in the X-ray spectra of Seyfert 1 galaxies are reviewed. The line profiles observed from MCG–6-30-15 and NGC 3516 show extended red wings to the line explained by large gravitational red-shifts. The results are consistent with the emission expected from an X-ray irradiated flat accretion disc orbiting very close to a black hole. Results fr...

We present the analysis of the X–ray spectra of 18 distant clusters of galaxies with redshift 0.3 < z < 1.3. Most of them were observed with the Chandra satellite in long exposures ranging from 36 ks to 180 ks. For two of the z > 1 clusters we also use deep XMM–Newton observations. Overall, these clusters probe the temperature range 3 ∼ < kT ∼ < 8 keV. Our analysis is aimed at deriving the iron...

We put together the results of XMM-Newton observations of a number of representative group and cluster samples at low and high redshifts. These results confirm the entropy ramp as an explanation of the observed scaling relations. We observe a mild evolution in the entropy of clusters. The observed degree of evolution is consistent with expectations of the shock heating at a fixed overdensity (5...

The RSCVn system σ Geminorum was observed by XMM-Newton on April 2001 during a large flare. We model the emission measure distribution (EMD) during the flare and during a quiescence period. In the flare, a two phase behaviour is found in which the cool plasma (kT < 2 keV) is not disturbed while a large hot component , at temperatues of kT > 3 keV emerges. Fundamental limitations on EMD modeling...
